Folk Intuitions about Reference Change and the Causal Theory of Reference

چکیده
In this paper, we present and discuss the findings of two experiments about reference change. Cases change have sometimes been invoked to challenge traditional versions semantic externalism, but relevant cases never tested empirically. The conducted use variants famous Twin Earth scenario test folk intuitions whether natural kind terms such as ‘water’ or ‘salt’ switch after being constantly (mis)applied different kinds. Our results indicate that is indeed so. We argue finding evidence against Saul Kripke’s causal-historical view reference, at least provisional in favor causal source suggested by Gareth Evans Michael Devitt.

Folk intuitions about consciousness
In science and philosophy, there is still no general agreement on what ‘consciousness’ is. But how do normal people (with no education in psychology or philosophy) use the term in their everyday life? What is the folk understanding of the word “conscious”? We conducted an online study on how the general public uses the word “consciousness” in their daily life. Participants (n=445) answered the ...
متن کاملFolk Ideas About Reference and Specific Indefinites
Informal discourse about specific indefinites often employs ideas such as ‘the individual the speaker had in mind’. Although this kind of discourse most often seems to proceed coherently, many semanticists are sceptical about theoretical or formal accounts employing these notions. In this paper, we argue that folk ideas about reference are central to semantics, figuring in the truth conditions ...
متن کاملSpencerism and the Causal Theory of Reference
Spencer’s heritage, while almost a forgotten chapter in the history of biology, lives on in psychology and the philosophy of mind. I particularly discuss externalist views of meaning, on which meaning crucially depends on a notion of reference, and ask whether reference should be thought of as cause or effect. Is the meaning of a word explained by what it refers to, or should we say that what w...
متن کاملSaving the intuitions: polylithic reference
My main aim in this paper is to clarify the concepts of referential success and of referential continuity that are so crucial to the scientific realism debate. I start by considering the three dominant theories of reference and the intuitions that motivate each of them. Since several intuitions cited in support of one theory conflict with intuitions cited in support of another something has to ...
متن کاملKuhn on Essentialism and the Causal Theory of Reference*
The causal theory of reference is often taken to provide a solution to the problems, such as incomparability and referential discontinuity, that the meaning-change thesis raised. I show that Kuhn successfully questioned the causal theory and Putnam’s idea that reference is determined via the sameness relation of essences that holds between a sample and other members of a kind in all possible wo...
